44-year-old Sirrone Newbern liked to draw and design clothing. Sirrone enjoyed his family and friends and made time for them. He smiled easy and often.
(If the name Sirrone Newbern or his face seem familiar, it’s because his son with the same first and last name was murdered earlier this year and I mistakenly used the above photo for a photo of the younger Sirrone.)
On August 26, 2023 Sirrone Newbern was at an apartment complex in the 8600 block of South C Street when a white sedan with two individuals pulled up. The driver got out with a gun already in his hand.
Surveillance video shows Sirrone retreating as the 30-year-old gunman fired. Sirrone fell, but the gunman kept firing until the pistol was empty.
The gunman then drove off. Police soon arrested him and charged him with Sirrone’s murder. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison in March of 2024.
This is why the comment section is reserved for friends and family of the victim who want to share thoughts or memories of him. Those interested in the criminal records of the people I write about are welcome to seek out those public records on their own.
I don’t know the Newbern family or friends, but I do know losing a son and a father just months apart to senseless violence must have been devastating.

Note: Like many homicide victims, Sirrone had a criminal record as did the homicide I wrote about last week. I mention it here because someone posted in the comment section last week about it. I agree with Bryan Stevenson that every one of us is ‘better than the worst things we’ve ever done.’
Rest in Peace Sirrone. Thank you for writing this for him.
