The 911 call just after 12:30pm was the first sign that something was wrong in the 6700 block of South Monroe Street. A man reported he’d been assaulted by his uncle. It was August 28, 2022. Tacoma police were dispatched almost two hours later, arriving around 2:20pm. Though the caller said his uncle was not armed, he also added the man had access to weapons and may try to shoot police officers.
When police attempted to arrest Peter, he demanded they stop following him and went back inside his house. Minutes later he exited the back. As Peter approached a car, an officer yelled at him to get away from the vehicle. At this point gunfire rang out from Peter’s direction and the officer took cover.
Police called for backup as more shots rang out.
Just after 3:00pm, another officer arrived on the scene and fired one shot from a rifle, hitting Peter from 183 yards away. Peter died of his injuries becoming the 30th Tacoma homicide of 2022.
I wasn’t able to learn much about Peter Collins. I know his criminal record. I know about the last hours of his life. I don’t have a photo of him. I don’t know who his parents are. I don’t know his family. I don’t know the circumstances and choices that led to Peter dying from a cop’s bullet. But I don’t need to know those things to know that there are lives that will never be the same due to his absence.
It’s all too easy to condemn someone’s entire life for their worst actions, but that ignores the innocent people in his life who never get to see him again. Those people matter just as much as any victim.
As always, the comment section is reserved for friends and relatives who knew Peter and want to share thoughts or memories of him.
