In this record year of homicides for our city, it isn’t surprising to encounter one where there is almost no information at all. What we know is that at around 10:10pm on October 9, 2022, 32-year-old Jerry Williams-Reyes was sitting in the driver’s seat of a vehicle in the 5200 block of South M Street. His passenger was an eighteen-year-old girl. They were both shot.
When first responders arrived, Jerry was unresponsive. They attempted life-saving procedures, but Jerry died on the scene from a gunshot wound in the back. He was the second homicide in less than twenty-four hours in Tacoma. His passenger survived her injuries. Jerry is the 37th Tacoma homicide of 2022.
Jerry was a union ironworker. He belonged to Local 86. He was fun and funny. He had a stepdaughter. He was making a life for himself and that life was cut short by an unknown killer for an unknown reason. If you have any information about this case, you are encouraged to contact the Tacoma Police Department at (253) 591-5959.
There’s a lot we don’t know about what happened to Jerry and why. What I can tell you is that his friends and family have a hole in their lives that will never be filled because Jerry is gone. Over time most will get used to it, but they’ll never forget. And all too often, they’ll think, ‘He should be here.’
If you happen to have known Jerry Williams-Reyes, please consider sharing a thought or memory in the comment section.
