38th Tacoma Homicide of 2022: Jose Lopez Cano
In the early morning hours of November 21, 2022, a 28-year-old man walked into 38-year-old Jose Lopez Cano’s trailer in a homeless encampment in the 8000 block of Hosmer. It was around 3:30am. About three hours later surveillance cameras captured the man leaving the trailer and going to another one. By that time, he’d already shot Jose Lopez Cano in the head and another man in the chest.
Jose Lopez Cano is the thirty-eighth Tacoma homicide of 2022 and the fifth homicide of 2022 to occur on Hosmer. To say that Hosmer is the worst crime area in Tacoma is an understatement. In fact, the crime rate in Hosmer has literally doubled since 2014.
The 28-year-old man who allegedly killed Jose and another man has also been charged with the shooting death in September of 2022 of Jeaneane Mattis.
Like most homeless victims, Jose did not have much of an online presence and I wasn’t able to find much information about him or even a photo.
Homicides like this one are the ones where I feel like it’s most important to write about them because the media rarely does. All too often, I receive emails from loved ones of victims who tell me that my article is the only thing they could find online telling them what happened.
Charging papers offer no motive for the killings, but the man arrested was found wearing the same clothes with blood on his pants.
As always, the comment section is for those who knew Jose and want to share, thoughts, memories, or photos of him. If you’d prefer, you can also email those to jackcameronis@gmail.com
