The Opening of the Second First Tacoma Narrows Bridge

The original Narrows Bridge was built in early 1940 and fell down just a few months later in a spectacular windstorm in November of 1940. The video footage is something almost every Tacoman has seen. But if you haven’t, here it is.

In 1950, WWII had been over for a while and we weren’t quite yet heavily involved in Korea. So the city decided it would be a good time to rebuild the fallen bridge. The Tacoma News Tribune kept pictorial track of the construction. And while I was researching another project I started collecting the images to share here.
It took only four days for some thrill seeker to climb one of the two towers of the bridge and do a headstand.
